How it works

Multidisciplinary dental treatment is based on a team approach between specialists and general dentists in the diagnosis and treatment of complex and severe dental conditions that require multiple therapeutic steps. Sometimes medical specialists are also part of the team.

This usually includes, but is not limited to, periodontal therapy, dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, orthodontic and periodontal therapy, endodontic therapy and prosthodontic therapy.

Who is in the team?

It depends on what you need. Typically a periodontist, your general dentist, and where relevant an orthodontist, endodontist or prosthodontist. Medical specialists are sometimes involved where a general health condition affects the treatment.

Do I need a referral?

Not necessarily, though many patients are referred by their own dentist. If you come directly, Prof Quaranta will still coordinate with your dentist so your care stays joined up.

Who coordinates my treatment?

The sequence matters in complex cases, so one clinician holds the plan and the order of the stages. Prof Quaranta does this for the periodontal and implant components and liaises with the rest of the team.

Prof Quaranta is a Clinical Professor of Periodontics at the University of Sydney and has published more than 200 research outputs, over 120 of them peer-reviewed. He lectures on periodontics and implant dentistry to universities, scientific societies and study clubs in Australia and overseas.
